The 7 modes of speech – Mark Rylance

With a string of awards for performances on both stage and screen including two Olivier Awards, three Tony Awards, a BAFTA, and a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for his portrayal of Rudolf Abel in Steven Spielberg's Bridge of Spies, Mark Rylance is widely regarded as one of the finest actors of his generation.

Following his much celebrated time as the first artistic director of Shakespeare's Globe from 1995 to 2005, in 2013 Rylance directed the great James Earl Jones and Vanessa Redgrave in Shakespeare's timeless comedy Much Ado About Nothing at the Old Vic Theatre in London.

Speaking here during the production, Rylance examines how in case of Shakespeare the beauty of language is as important as the meaning.

The voice is a very very sensitive thing isn’t it. It really really expresses so much about you, and if an actor doesn’t know why they’re saying something – they can even know what the line means – but if they don’t know why they’re saying it they won’t find the voice for it.

He goes on;

The Greeks had seven different modes of speech – clarity, rhetoric, grandeur, beauty, speed, ethos, and the last one was decorum or gravity which was when a speaker managed all these other things.

The greeks would say to a writer or speech maker grandeur is a very important thing, it increases curiosity, it draws the audience towards you, and it frames, like a wonderful picture frame, the eventual statement.

I think our culture has become so obsessed with clarity that we’ve rather suppressed the other modes of speech that other cultures have enjoyed such as grandeur, beauty, ethos and speed and decorum. I’ve nothing against the intellectual enjoyment of Shakespeare, but it can rather throw the beautiful sensuality of Shakespeare into shadows, and so I feel, with the actors, I want to encourage them that the beauty of what they’re saying and how they’re saying it is as important as the meaning or the emotional truth.
