Jodie Comer is arguably one of the greatest acting finds of recent years. With a string of first class performances under her belt including Ivy Moxam in the BBC Three mini-series Thirteen, Kate Parks in Doctor Foster, and in her recent incarnation as the assassin Villanelle in Killing Eve which has earned her a string of awards and shot her to global stardom.

Speaking here to BAFTA GURU, Jodie talks choosing and prepping for a role, making tough business decisions, and rejection.

“What I look for in a part is a challenge. I really like to mix it up and do something different from what I’ve previously done.”

“I like to leave a lot to the day. I believe a lot happens in the moment. You can only do so much (preparation) and then you’ve gotta just let it be.”

She goes on to remember a time when she decided to leave her first agent and make that dreaded call...

“When I was sixteen I had to leave my first agent. I remember having to ring them and tell them I was leaving which at the time was huge. But I realised I had to grow up and I had too take responsibility for my own decisions. That’s played a massive part in my career. I’ve always kind of been headstrong in the decisions I make”

And on rejection...

“You might do thirty auditions and still not get a single role. There’s a lot of rejection, but you can’t get disheartened by it. It’s a challenge. I think as I’ve gotten older I’ve learned to let go a little bit more. I still come out of an audition and think “Why did I say that line like that?” But as I’ve got older I’m a bit better at going “OK well if it works out it’s meant to be but if it doesn’t thats fine”
