International theatre company HUNCHtheatre was founded in May 2018 by multi award winning director Vladimir Shcherban and award-winning playwright and actor Oliver Bennett. They had worked together and discovered a shared understanding of theatre and so it was a natural decision to set up the company. They set up HUNCHtheatre to work quickly, without barriers and always following their HUNCH to explore any topic of interest. Their work reflects the international make up of the company, mixing European, British and Colombian aesthetics and creating a much needed cultural exchange.
Their adaptation of the nineteenth century Russian masterpiece A Hero Of Our Time by Mikhail Lermontov garnered widespread critical acclaim and enjoyed a sell-out run in Edinburgh, as well as at the Arcola Theatre and an international tour of Russia and Germany. Choosing to tackle this adaptation first appealed to the company as it was not well known in the English-speaking world, and director Vladimir Shcherban wanted to see how it’s subject matter of male aggression and nihilism resonated today. Vladimir said;
“I wanted to create a world that was nineteenth century Russia and at the same time modern day London to show the universal themes of love and cruelty”
They made the show in Vladimir’s social housing living room in west London and started performing to 12 people at a time. The reaction was very good and they were invited to perform in an underground lounge in Soho before taking the show on what became a hugely successful tour. It was called ‘a sugar rush of intrigue and excitement’ (The Scotsman), ‘a blistering feat of storytelling’ (The Stage), ‘frisking entertaining’ on the Telegraph critical list, ‘a very clever adaptation’ by the TLS and ‘worth its weight in gold’ by the BBC. And listed by BroadwayWorld as one of the best theatre shows of 2018.
During the London shows they want to gather all friends of the company to say thank you, talk about plans for the future and meet new people who can become part of their exciting and unpredictable journey.
“We are thrilled to be returning to the underground lounge in the Karma Sanctum Hotel in Soho for just two special London shows on 22nd and 23rd May, prior to a tour of Russia and Germany. It is also a celebration of the 1st birthday of HUNCHtheatre.”
HUNCHtheatre are very excited about the future. They have recently finished a co-production with Stage RC, an adaptation of Victor Shenderovcih’s new play ‘To See Salisbury’, about the Novichok poisoning in Salisbury last year which will perform at RADA this June/July. They are also working on an entirely new show about the real life experiences of an ambulance driver in east London, exploring issues of health, death and how we deal with people outside of society. There is a HUNCHtheatre department in Belarus working on a version of Kafka’s ‘A Judgement’ and a department in Berlin is being set up. They are also working, in association with the Arcola, on an original script about the life and death of famous Soviet theatre director Vsevolod Meyerhold and his wife Zinaida Reich.
