Two of Hollywoods leading film studios – 20th Century Fox and Paramount – have ZERO female directors lined up to fulfil their entire film slate until 2018! Thats a total of nearly 50 films over the next two years with not a single female Director at the helm.
The issue has been very prominent in recent years having been highlighted by several highly successful female directors including Kathryn Bigelow, Ava DuVernay, Sofia Coppola and Angelina Jollie.
Neither studio has agreed to comment.
Melissa Silverstein, founder and publisher of Women and Hollywood said:
“It is always shocking, though unfortunately not surprising, to see that studios continue to not give women opportunities to direct…This is a complex issue. The film business is layered with sexism so that when you peel away one layer, you still have many layers to get through.”
The statistics make for very shocking reading with only 9 percent of the top 100-grossing movies being directed by women last year.
Despite the irrefutable sexism, Hollywood continues to maintain it’s spiel about efforts to redress the balance . Stacey Snider, who joined Fox in 2014 as co-chairman and CEO stated:
“The issue of opportunity for women is real, and it’s in front of us…It’s incumbent upon us as business leaders to really address it seriously.”
We’ll believe it when we see it.
