"ACTING IS A SURVIVAL MECHANISM"

Arguably one of the greatest screen actors of all time, Marlon Brando has never been afraid to speak his mind. He also belonged to a school of actors who fought against the way in which the craft of acting is often talked of in grandiose reverential terms and promoted a more matter of fact view of the art form. In this video, Brando is directly challenged on this point by host Dick Cavett who asks:
“Why do you downgrade acting as a profession?“
Despite sensing an immediate 'prickling' from Brando, he elaborates by adding:
“I’ve read it in the press. You’ve said over the years it’s not a fit profession for a man”
In an attempt to clarify, Marlon Brando explains how he sees 'acting' as merely an everyday skill that we all use, rather than some high art form:
“We’re all acting all the time. We couldn’t survive a second if we weren’t able to act. Acting is a survival mechanism. A social lubricant. We act to save our lives every day”
